NON POINT SOURCE POLLUTION Non point source pollution comes from many diffuse sources. NPS is caused when rain fall or snow moves over and through the ground. As it move it carries with it natural and human made pollutants. These in turn get deposited into the lakes and rivers, wetlands, coastal estuaries, and even our underground aquifers. Some of these pollutants include: fertilizers, and herbicides, from both agricultural and residential landscapes. Oil , grease, and toxic chemicals from urban runoff and energy production. Sediment from improperly managed construction sites, crop and forest land, and eroding stream banks. Bacteria and nutrients from livestock, pet wastes, and faulty septic systems. The effects of these pollutants on our water systems varies from one system to the next, each being independent of the next. Every situation is different and warrants separate evaluations. We all can help in the effort to reduce the amounts of non point source pollutions by being more aware of the way we use the chemicals, soaps, and pesticides in our yards and around the home.
